Karen is a TTCT (Comhaltas) qualified traditional Irish music teacher, she is also a qualified secondary school teacher (Maths) and CRB checked.
Meitheal Cheoil Community Music Group North London
Meitheal Cheoil is a community group, which aims to promote the learning of Irish Traditional Music for children and adults in North London. Classes are held weekly in the London Irish Centre (Camden) and St Gabriel's Community Centre (Holloway), providing affordable lessons on the tin whistle, flute, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion and harp. All ages and abilities are catered for, ranging from those who have never played music before to those who wish to expand their repertoire in an informal group setting. The group is lead by tutors Kathy Walton and Karen Ryan who have been teaching in London for more than 25 years.
In London we are privileged to be part of a vibrant music community, historically renowned for playing host to and producing some of the finest players the world has known. London is distinctive, diverse and yet close-knit. Over the past few years, dozens of London musicians and mentors have supported Meitheal Cheoil, whether dropping in as guests to pass on a tune, helping out as teachers, assisting with competitions or in the Irish language, putting source material on tape, teaching a dance or two and joining in at the ceili, coming in to mingle, chat and answer questions, or just simply welcoming our students into sessions, making them feel valued as musicians at a most formative stage.

Wednesday After School - Children's Beginner and Intermediate Tin Whistle Classes at ST Michael's Grammar School, Nether Street, North Finchley - Karen Ryan and colleagues teach tin whistle from beginner to intermediate level, occasionally including instrument trial lessons for the young musicians to consider which second instrument they might like to learn when progress allows.
